ENERGY EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques, Modern Energy Tapping or Tapping)

Emotional Freedom Techniques (also called Tapping) works on the principle that emotional upsets or disturbances are held in the body’s invisible energy field, and can be released by focused statements accompanied by gentle tapping on acupressure points, mainly on the head and hands.  It takes only minutes to learn the basic method, which you can use by yourself, and the practitioner will guide you with special techniques for the particular issue you have.

There are various styles of EFT or Tapping and after studying the original form of EFT, I retrained in “Energy EFT” because it is simpler to use, it avoids some of the resistance issues that sometimes happen with the original EFT, and it goes beyond letting go of the problem to allow access to high-energy feelings of well-being and being “in the zone”. Using Energy EFT can not only allow you to shift unwanted patterns but can link to positive inner resources that can help you improve your life and relationships.

It often happens that a person can notice a positive effect upon immediately starting to use EFT; however depending on the issues and what you want to achieve, a number of sessions is usually necessary. One to three sessions are recommended to start with and once you have learned the technique, you not only can practise it on your own but you can arrange for further help in person or by phone whenever you need it.

EFT can be applied for the effects of traumatic experiences and loss, either as soon as possible or for long-standing disturbances. Some people may feel traumatised by just watching a disaster or violent event on TV news, and if this has happened to you, EFT might be what you are looking for.

As well as for emotional problems and related issues, EFT can also be a form of life coaching to encourage confidence, creativity, better life balance, attitude shifts, and positive change.

Energy EFT is also now known as Modern Energy Tapping which brings in some new techniques, and provides methods of working that do not need to involve looking for the roots of the problem in the past. This “positive EFT” concentrates on how to build up a sense of well-being which can provide benefits in every area of life.

Hypnotherapy and NLP

Hypnosis is a natural state very similar to daydreaming or just relaxing and letting your thoughts drift. If you have ever experienced guided relaxation or guided imagery, guided meditation, regression or relaxation therapy, it is much the same thing. In the hypnotic state (usually known as "trance") you will generally feel relaxed and restful. You will be aware of your surroundings when you want to be - you will not be unconscious! At any time you will be able to return to full awareness - if necessary, you can actually say to the hypnotist "I'd like to come back now!" In trance you will be more aware of what is happening inside you - thoughts, images in your head, feelings. You will also be aware of the voice of the hypnotist, but sometimes you will lose track of what he/she is saying, like you do when daydreaming. Allow yourself to "drift" if you find this happening - it is an important part of hypnotherapy to give the unconscious mind space to express itself. The hypnotherapist will ask you to concentrate when and if he/she needs you to. He/she may also ask you to describe what is happening in your head, ask you to explore it further or to try changing part of it. Doing this often helps people to get insight into their problems.

During hypnosis, the therapist will deliver positive suggestions, dialogue with your unconscious mind, and/or guide you through visualisations or mental exercises that will help you.

Each person’s experience of hypnosis is unique and some people go “deeper” than others. The ability to have a “deeper” experience can improve with practice. However, good results can still be obtained even if you feel you haven’t gone ”deep” and it is perfectly normal to be fully aware of your surroundings and to think you haven’t been hypnotised!

Hypnoanalysis is psychotherapy under hypnosis to trace the roots of problems in the past.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) has a set of techniques and mental exercises that is often combined with hypnotherapy. The therapist may select different NLP methods according to the issue. NLP presumes that you have the inner resources you need to solve your problems, and the exercises help you to give things a new meaning, scrap unwanted patterns of thinking and find your own ways to change.

Counselling provides a professional listening ear, without making judgements or assumptions. Some people’s most pressing need is to be able to talk freely about their problems and their situation, and to clarify their thoughts and feelings, what their options are and how they can go forward. Depending on what arises from the counselling sessions, I may suggest further work with EFT, hypnotherapy, or another approach.

Regression Therapy/ Past Life Therapy

Past Life Regression or Past Life Therapy is a spiritual form of hypnotherapy. The unconscious mind has vast resources and, guided by the therapist, can select a life scenario outside the present space/time that can relate to issues encountered in the present life. Many people believe this is accessing the memory of a previous incarnation. However it is not necessary for the therapist or the client to believe in reincarnation for this to be a powerful and transformational experience. For the purpose of the session, the experience is normally regarded as a past life. In the way I work, I provide a spiritual introduction to the process asking for guidance, and on completion of the life story I conduct a spiritual healing process that addresses the events, decisions and effects of the life that has been revealed, finally bringing the client back to the present. Sometimes childhood memories or psychic experiences can surface in these sessions and I have extensive experience in guiding clients through whatever may emerge. A minimum session length of 90 minutes is recommended, allowing some time for relaxation, integration and/or discussion at the end.

I am a member of the Past Life Therapists Association, which is for professionally qualified hypnotherapists who specialise in past life regression. I completed a lengthy and intensive training in Past Life Healing in the 1990s, with the late Kiana Park of the Centre for Past Life Healing, and one of the workshops was held at Polhawn Fort in Rame, Torpoint, on the North Cornwall coast. The training involved regression hypnosis, various forms of healing and shamanic journeying. I didn’t know then that years later I would eventually come to live in Cornwall. I have also taken various other trainings in past life work over the years.

Metaphor Therapy (Clean Language)

Metaphor therapy takes the client on an inner journey starting from how the client imagines or visualises their issue. Usually the client can imagine their problem as a symbolic object in or around their body. This leads into a guided visualisation which can go back into childhood or into completely imaginative directions. Along the way, positive solutions and resources are found. Hypnotic trance is not necessary though the process can be used with hypnosis if desired. The method I use is based on techniques called Clean Language, developed by the late David Grove with whom I trained. David pioneered the use of this method with adult survivors of childhood abuse and with Vietnam veterans, since it is a gentle way of working with trauma. Since then the method has been extended to apply to life coaching, business coaching and creative coaching. In those applications it is no longer therapy but a way of using imagination, visualisation and metaphor to generate new ideas, to find solutions to practical problems, and to build a common vision for teams.

“Clean Language” means that the words used by the therapist in the process are neutral and do not introduce any ideas not in the client’s mind, and so do not influence or distort the client’s experience in any way. The material that emerges from the client’s memories or unconscious mind is therefore uncontaminated by the assumptions, guesses or interpretations of the therapist.

Spiritual Coaching

Spiritual coaching is unique for every individual. Using metaphor, Clean language, Energy EFT and/or other techniques, you embark upon an inner quest to find your vision. This is usually a metaphoric journey into an inner landscape where what you encounter symbolises your challenges, aspirations and strengths. Typically, clients can gain a greater sense of direction and self-assurance, allowing change to happen over time. Some practitioners have called similar work “Soul Coaching”.

Support for Asperger’s and High Functioning Autism

I am knowledgeable about autism and can work with adult clients who have Asperger’s or high-functioning autism (diagnosed or self-diagnosed), including pre- and post-diagnosis counselling. I work with people who are able to look after themselves but who wish to improve social and communication skills. I can provide:

Help for stress, negative thoughts, anxiety, confidence and other issues.

Counselling for people who think that someone close to them might be autistic, aiming to improve communication and also to reach a decision about seeking a medical diagnosis.

Help in enabling autistic and non-autistic family members to communicate better with each other, reducing the chance of stress reactions and upsets.

Coaching and guidance in social skills or coping skills for particular situations.

If you think you might be autistic, or have self-diagnosed, but do not have anyone to talk to about it, I can offer counselling enabling you to discuss how you experience yourself as being different, and help you make sense of that.

My services are private and outside the National Health system so nothing will appear on medical records.

My relevant training includes an Advanced Autism Awareness Diploma (Centre of Excellence), a course on the Autism Spectrum taught by the Open University, a certificate in Understanding Autism taught by University of Kent, an Understanding Autism certificate for therapists taught by Yorkshire Therapies and Training and an NCFE/CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism. I am a member of the National Autistic Society.

(Please note I do not offer diagnostic services since I am not qualified to do so. Cornwall residents can find further information on Asperger’s and diagnostic services at the link to Outlook South West on the links page . Please note that though self-referral to the Asperger’s team at Outlook South West used to be available, they are no longer accepting self-referrals and you must first ask your GP. )
